Yesterday, April 21, 2025, we received the sad news that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, had returned to the house of the Father. We join the Catholic community worldwide to mourn and pray for the repose of his soul.
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis touched the hearts of millions, reminding us to give a practical dimension to our faith; he frequently called for reconciliation and urged us not to leave anyone out in our journey of faith.
I earlier instructed through the Chancellor that Masses be celebrated today (or, if more appropriate, on another suitable day this week) by all priests for the repose of Pope Francis. Today, in commemoration, we shall ring the Church bells at 12:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the day on which he will be buried, I call on all priests to ensure that a Requiem Mass is celebrated with as many faithful as possible for the deceased Holy Father.
In the meantime, in addition to any other initiatives being taken, it is fitting to have an image of Pope Francis displayed in a suitable place in our Churches, Chapels, and Oratories, together with some flowers in his memory.
In this time of mourning, let us remember the words of Pope Francis, especially during this year of hope: "May the power of hope fill our days, as we await with confidence the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ." Let us carry forward his vision of a Church that is a home for all, especially the poor and the suffering.
May he rest in peace.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Jerome Feudjio Bishop of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands
